Plastic has become an inseparable part of our lives. The amount of plastics consumed annually has been increasing steadily. Plastic waste contributes to a large volume of the total solid wastes. Most plastics are non-degradable, and they may take a long time to break down once they end up in landfills.

Burning plastic releases toxic gases like dioxins, mercury, furans, and polychlorinated biphenyls (known as BCPs). It becomes a hazard to human health, vegetation, and animal life.

Dioxins are severe environmental pollutants that reside on crops and waterways and eventually enter our food and bodies. These dioxins are potentially lethal pollutants that can cause cancer and disrupt the thyroid and respiratory systems.

Incernarating plastic waste in open fields is a significant source of air pollution. About 12 percent of most municipal solid waste is made up of plastic of one kind or another, and 40 percent of the world’s garbage is burned, according to a study “Toxic Pollutants from Plastic Waste —A Review.” The disposal of plastics products contributes significantly to their environmental impact.
